Pope John Paul II

Almost everyone knows who the Pope is, but most do not know where he came from or what he did before he devoted his life to God. The Pope's early life was full of tragedy. Yet he pulled through all of his turmoil to become a great philosopher and religious leader.

John Paul's early life would defy the imagination of a fanciful screenwriter. (Wiegel,2) On May 18, 1920 he was born Karol Jozef Wojtyla, but his friends called him Lolek. His home was in the Polish town of Wadowice, where 6,000 Catholics and 1,500 Jews lived, which led him to develop close friendships with those not of his faith. He was the youngest of three children, one of whom died in infancy. His parents were Karol Wojtyla Senior, a retired army officer, and Emilia Kaczorowska Wojty1a.

Karol's childhood was filled with tragedy. At the age of nine his mother died from heart and kidney problems. When he was twelve his  twenty-six year old brother, Dr. Edmund Wojtyla, died from scarlet fever (that) he contracted from a patient. This left him alone with his father as his only living relative. After these events his father decided to raise him with strict discipline but he didnt' (no contractions) forget to have fun. (explain)

Karol's education began in 1926 when he entered the first grade at the local elementary school located in the town administration building, which was near his family's apartment building. He was known to be a gifted student in all areas of the curriculum. In 1930 he entered Marcin Wadowita State Secondary School, an all-boys' junior-senior high school. During secondary school, Karol began acting in local theatrical productions. At some stage in his high school career, Karol became a member of the Sodality of Mary, which was a society of young men dedicated to fostering devotion to the mother of Christ. He also completed a mandatory course in military preparedness in the summer of 1937. In the course of his last year he was chosen to give a welcoming address to the archbishop of Krakow and also was valedictorian of his graduating class.

From the start he was raised to be a Catholic. He was baptized into the Church on June 20, just 33 days after he was born. Then in May, at the age of nine, he received his First Holy Communion. Nine years later, at the age of 18, he was confirmed. In 1930 a young priest came to Wadowice to teach catechism to elementary and middle schoolboys. He remembers Karol as "quite tall, but also somewhat plump, a very lively boy, very talented, very sharp and very go , who got along well with both his friends and his teachers."( Wiegel, 31) His early experiences in church helped to plant the seeds of a priestly vocation.

However, Karol's devotion to the church did not begin right away. In 1938 he entered Jagiellonian University in Krakow where he studied literature and philosophy. He spent three years there before the German invasion, during which he was involved in a theater group. In 1940, to avoid imprisonment and deportation, he took a job as a stonecutter (needs explanations) in a quarry. Then a few months later, in February of 1941, his father died at the age of 61 (spell out), leaving his dream of seeing his son commit to priesthood unfulfilled.

While Poland was under German control, Karol continued his studies and worked with theater groups underground. Then, in 1942, he began studying at an underground seminary in Krakow and registered for theology

classes at the University. He continued his studies, acted and worked in a chemical plant until 1944. He took refuge in the archbishop's residence until the end of the war. In 1946 he was ordained in Krakow, he also earned two masters degrees and a doctorate before taking up priestly duties, in 1949, as assistant pastor in Krakow.

Karol was a very active priest. He served as chaplain at St. Florian's Church in Krakow while he worked on his second doctorate degree in philosophy at the University. In 1954 he was hired as a non-tenured professor at the Catholic University of Lublin, the only Catholic university in the communist world. He was appointed to the Chair of Ethics at Catholic University in 1956. In 1958 he was named the auxiliary bishop of Krakow.

In 1960 Karol began to publish various types of literary works. Some of these works include: "The Jeweler Shop", a play, "Love and Responsibility", and his second doctoral thesis titled "Evaluation of the Possibility of constructing a Christian Ethic based on the ~ystem of Max Scheler. Then in 1962 he became an intellectual leader of the Vatican Council II and took special interest in religious freedom. That same year he was named the acting archbishop of Krakow. Five years later Pope Paul VI appointed him to the position of cardinal. From 1967 to 1978, he published

many literary works, such as "The Acting Person" and was also invited to talk at universities such as the Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and a university in Milan.

In October of 1978, the Sacred College of Cardinals elected Karol as the next pope after John Paul I died unexpectedly ofa heart attack after reigning for only one month. The decision process was long and hard but after seven rounds of balloting the college agreed on Karol as the candidate for pope. When he formally accepted his election he reportedly had tears in his eyes. He told the crowd from a balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square, "I was afraid to receive this nomination but I did it in the spirit of obedience to Our Lord and in the total confidence in His mother, the most holy Madonna." (Pope John Paul 11/28/01)

Karol chose the same name as his predecessor and became the first Slavic pope. He also became the first non-Italian pope in 455 years, the last being Adrain VI in 1523. At the age of 58 (spell out) he became the youngest pope in 132 years.

John Paul II is unlike any pope before him. During his reign as pope he has traveled to six different continents and well over 60 (spell out) different foreign countries. Some places he has visited are: Culiapan, Mexico; Auschwitz,

Nathaniel 6

German; Nairobi, Kenya; Horizonte, Brazil; Managua, Nicaragua; Brisbane, Australia; Seoul, South Korea; Tirana, Albania; Denver, Colorado, USA; and Siauliai, Lithuania. He also has continued publishing literary works, such as "Responsible Love", "The Gospel of Life", and "That they may be as One".

However, his reign as pope has not always been a tranquil one. On May 13, 1981 he was shot in St. Peter's Square. He also had surgery on July 15, 1992 to remove a benign intestinal tumor and on November 11, 1993, he broke his shoulder. Furthennore, on October 8, 1996, John Paul II had his appendix removed. These experiences have only strengthened the Pope's relationship with God. ~

From Karol JozefWojtyla to Pope John PaullI, this man has lead (led) a very interesting life,  He has experienced the loss of loved ones at an early age, nearly died several times, lived through World War II in Europe, reigned as pope, and so much more. Through trial and tribulation, he has pro,:en to be one of the greatest leaders of all time.

(Excellent information, minor mistakes, nice pictures, Good Job!)
