WLN Red Suit Buying Guide (last of ’84)

Well boys and girls, moms and dads, and all of you who aren’t sure, we have almost made it through 1984.  Not totally unscathed, but with enough left to put out the annual buying guide to library software.  As with previous years we’ve left stuff off the list that we wouldn’t even boot, and the expected WLN (not the bibliographic utility) cracks are included after the product listing in brackets (see what an expanded keyboard will do).  If you’re going to sue remember we borrowed money for all of the hardware around here against insurance policies, so even knocking me off isn’t worth your while.

Before we get to that, I need to share some hot stuff that can’t wait until next month:

HabaMerge is a far out utility to let you do from letters and three by mailing labels from Appleworks  Look out renewal letters…..

Skills Maker from Library Software gives you a tool to create library instruction materials from your place.  It’s outasight.

I failed last month to comment on the fine job the micro interest group of AASL did in getting the micro on the Atlanta program.  The sessions were not only many but good, and I have to come back down off of one of my ancient pleas: the professional association doesn’t address the kinds and types of things wired librarians need.  I would think JT from Hoosiersl and BC from Coors country had a lot to do with that…now if we can get them to change that from an “interest” to a “user’s” group.  I can see JT’s expression now…”Eric, You are never satisfied.”  On occasion, yes.  What are they going to be able to do in my backyard (Chitown this summer)…?

For those of you in the Chicago metropolitan area, don’t forget the Library Microcomputer Management Symposium to be held in conjunction with III on February 23rd at the Hyatt-Ohare; and the panel discussion on Friday the 22nd with the MICRO-IDEAS conference at the Arlington Park Hilton.  If you need more details on either of these meetings, just drop us a line at Micro Libraries.

Finally, my speculation on the “new” Apple hardware.  That’s been a real hot topic in the journals lately so I’ll put my guess I with the rest:  look at a “c” and imagine it with 3 ˝” cartridge drive (and I’ll guess 320K for the tie-breaker) and an 80 column by sixty line flat panel flip up built in.  If this happens the hottest third party item ever made will be an “e” drive interface card with one set of pins for a 5 Ľ” and a second connector for the 3 ˝”.  Schools will have to have them.

Finally, thanks to all of you who have made this year dynamite for yours truly.  Remeber to catch the Wired Librarian’s favorite movie: “It’s a wonderful life.  They always drag it out of the vault at this time of the year.  The part when Billie brings in the laundry basket is how I feel every day when the mail comes – being able to touch base with so many tremendous folks.  Have a good holiday and see you next year…..

Also, for what we believe is the first time anywhere, and indext to the program type appears at the end of the list.  Of course, the program titles are in alphabetical order.  If you know of any other micro library management software, we’d appreciate hearing about here at WLN (not the bibliographic utility.
