A Moon Over Anywhere will do…..

Changes in Attitudes, changes in attitudes, cont…

We are almost done with the move, but the new address is:

Micro Libraries

701 64th St.

Des Moines, IA 50312

This address applies for WLN: not the bibliographic utility, and all Library Management Microcomputer Template Clearinghouse, and all of the other stuff we’re into. Those of you in the media, if you could mention this it would be greatly appreciated…

ALA in Chi

The big news is ALA is coming to Chicago, and this issue is almost completely dedicated to things you should look for and do while in the Windy City.

            Be There or Be Square

The fifth Wired Librarian’s Newsletter Intelectual Development and Social Hour will be held at the Holiday Inn on Ohio St. (ask for my room) on Monday, July 8th at 8 pm.  All reader’s are invited to come and meet the movers and the shakers of the library micro world. Some of the most interesting conversation about micros goes on in the three, four, five, six hours the crowd gets together and talks about micros and libraries. Be advised that you need to bring your own firmware.

            Apple Library User’s Group

Monica Ertel, the headshead behind ALUG has set the date for their meeting as Tuesday July 9th at 10 AM at Roosevelt University. The plans are 180 degrees from the bleu crew. There will be lots of time for folks with the same application problems to get together, some short presentations by vertical market folks, and other goodies (lord, please no wine and cheese: this is CHI not CAL). Everyone should try and make it.

            IBM PC & M300 User’s Group

Allan Pratt will lead the way with bylaws and membership dues and all of the charter stuff. This session will come down on the same day *July 9* but occur at 1:30 pm. Since I now work in a place  with a stickered PC I plan to go but what about clones?

            On the program

BC, the grande dame of library microcomputing, who is the mover and the joiner in the crowd, has done her usual excelent job of detailing ALA automation sessions. Thanks to her you should know:

Saturday 7/6  LAMA 9am “Great Expectations”

(Hagerty, Metsger, Rochell & Sager)  more than likely mainframe

Saturday 7/6 YASD 2 pm “Apps to YA Services”

(Smedinoff and Skapura) who let Skoops in the door?

Sunday 7/7 RASD 8am “End User system”

Online systems operated directly by patrons

Sunday 7/7 ASCLA 2pm  “Multitype Lib Networks”

Linking dissimiliar computer systems

Sunday 7/7 LITA 2pm  “Lib telecom options”

there’s no modem like your modem there’s no modem you know

Monday 7/8 ACRL 8am “online media and LS 2000”

Monday 7/8 LITA 9:30 am “Tech Standards in Action”

(Hildreth, McCallum, Crawford, McPherson, Peters & Paul)

Monday 7/8 PLA 2pm “Bulletin Boards”

(Dewey (who else?) Garber, Polly) public bbs systems in libs

Tuesday 7/9 AASL 2 pm Concurrent Sessions

“OnLine Student Services” & Managing micro software & inservice”

(Herb, Champlin, Brown)

As you can see, the cupboard is really bare with only about three micro specific presentations. Well, I guess that leave’s more time for the exhibits….

The Show

As usual, WLN: Not the bibliographic utility provides you with a complete guide (as good as we can get in advance anyway) and rather than your silly exhibit guide, we will put our’s in our booth order to make it easier for you to go up and down the aisles. As is the tradition, we will give you who we are going to scope out and the questions we are going to ask. They may not be inteligent, but….

Booth #           Vendor                                                Who to talk to…

103                  The Library Corporation                   Brower Murphy

The folks who showed us how the blow the high priced bibliographic vendors away – with laser disks

200-2               Highsmith Co. Inc.                             Duncan, Glen or Jay

Thank ‘em for supporting the Template clearinghouse and scope out their micro supplies

348                  Addison Public Library                      Harvey Hahn

scope out the very decent “CARDS” program for cat card production

417                  Catalog Card Corporation of America

Have they dropped the price of their card production software?

457                  Datapro

Scope out their very complete guides, but who can afford them?

611                  Rose Record Stores

One of the finest tune procurement places in the modern world

637                  Ringold Management Systems

One of the oldest library micro software vendors

711-13             CLASS
How does it feel to have a data base with local call #’s?

728-32             OCLC

Scope out a copy of OCLC micro but rant and rave about their outrageous price structure and ask em how they can copyright a data base with so many public domain records.

905-7               BRS

see if they have dropped their fees

1011                McDonald’s Corporation

2007-21           Brodart

scope out the laser disk of the LA county collection

2121                ALANET / ALA

how come it costs  so much to talk to other librarians?

2221                Libraries Unlimited

The folks who did Costa and Troutner’s books

2253                The Computer Company                   Elizabeth Diggles

A nice lady with interesting conversion concepts

2325                UTLAS

Scope out progress north of the border

2343                Information Access

Scope out if they have taken some of their indexes to micro yet

2423-27           Data Phase                                         Martha Gershun

Ask her how come she hasn’t supplied WLN: not the bibliographic utility with the names and addresses of sites she has up and running so I can correct my own assumptions about EASTWIND software?

Show the vendor’s you’re in the known and travel the exhibit halls with your copy of WLN: Not the bibliographic utility under your arm. At least they’ll be ready for your questions!

Some of the major players (bleu and the fruit co) whom we expected to show for the first time are missing. Also, many of the micro players who appeared last year and AASL are not listed. We know why LSC is not here, but it will be interesting to see how many warm bodies appear even though their booths are not. Don’t fret, we’ll find out if it bytes us.

Come to chi, enjoy the town, but whatever you do, don’t miss the intellectual development and social hour, Monday July 8 in the Holiday Inn. We couldn’t do it without you.
